Partnering for mission delivery: unlocking the power of business

The UK’s 5.5 million businesses – employing 27.8 million people and generating £5.3 trillion in turnover – are uniquely positioned to help tackle the country’s biggest social and environmental challenges.

Over four in five (84%) business leaders agree the government should do more to support UK businesses to innovate and scale solutions to these issues.

In consultation with over 40 organisations and individuals, ReGenerate identified over 60 examples of businesses already helping to deliver the government’s five missions, from easing NHS pressure through preventative care to boosting economic growth by building affordable housing and tackling unemployment. But businesses could do much more.

Our research finds that:

  • Businesses have the scale needed to accelerate the government’s missions;

  • Businesses have a unique and powerful ability to innovate and scale solutions;

  • Businesses doing good drives business success and economic growth; and

  • Businesses want to help

But almost two thirds (64%) of business leaders say it’s hard to connect with government to help tackle social and environmental challenges, and over half (55%) say the government holds them back from doing more.

We call on government to unlock the power of business by:

  1. Establishing a unit at the heart of government, focused on unlocking the power of business to achieve societal impact;

  2. Embedding a partnership-first approach across government; and

  3. Creating a National Strategy for Purpose-Driven Business.
